  14.         <text><span class="style42"></span><span class="style12">FIJI</span><span class="style14"></span><span class="style42">Official name:</span><span class="style13"> Matanitu Ko Viti (Sovereign Democratic Republic of Fiji)</span><span class="style42">Member of: </span><span class="style13">UN</span><span class="style42">Area: </span><span class="style13">18333 km2 (7078 sq mi)</span><span class="style42">Population: </span><span class="style13">762000 (1993 est)</span><span class="style42">Capital: </span><span class="style13">Suva 141000 (city 70000; 1988 census)</span><span class="style42">Languages: </span><span class="style13">English (official), Fijian (50%), Hindi (45%)</span><span class="style42">Religions: </span><span class="style13">Methodist (45%), Hindu (38%)</span><span class="style42">GOVERNMENT</span><span class="style13">The 70-seat House of Representatives is elected by universal adult suffrage for five years to represent four ethnic voting lists ΓÇô 37 members are elected by Fijians, 27 by Indians, 1 by Rotumans and 5 by others. The traditional Fijian Council of Chiefs elects the President and 24 of the 34 members of the appointed Senate. The President appoints a Prime Minister.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">The mountainous larger islands are volcanic in origin. The smaller islands are mainly coral reefs. </span><span class="style42">Climate: </span><span class="style13">Fiji experiences high temperatures and heavy rainfall with local variations.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">FijiΓÇÖs economy depends on agriculture, with sugar cane as the main cash crop. Copra, ginger, fish and timber are also exported. Tourism is increasing in importance. </span><span class="style42">Currency: </span><span class="style13">Fiji dollar.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">Fiji was settled by Melanesians and Polynesians in around 1500 BC. Tasman reached Fiji in 1643, but Europeans did not settle until the early 1800s. During a period of great unrest, Chief Cakobau, who controlled the west, requested British assistance and ceded Fiji to Britain (1874). Indian labourers arrived to work on sugar plantations, reducing the Fijians, who retained ownership of most of the land, to a minority. Since independence (1970), racial tension and land disputes have brought instability. A military takeover in 1987 overthrew an Indian-led government and established a Fijian-dominated republic outside the Commonwealth. Recent emigration of Indians has resulted in the reemergence of a Fijian majority.</span></text>
